What Happens During a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels usually take only 30 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on how deep the formula is going into the skin. Before applying the chemical solution, the skin needs to be prepped. The patient’s skin is cleansed, and their eyes and hair are covered to prevent accidental splashing. The solution is then applied to the skin using an instrument such as a brush or sponge. Peeling solutions are formulated with an exfoliating acid, such as glycolic or salicylic acid.
It is normal for patients to feel a slight stinging sensation when the solution is applied to their skin. Once the solution has sat on the skin for a predetermined amount of time, it is neutralized and removed from the treatment area. A cool compress is then applied to the face to relax the skin while it heals. For patients that receive deep peels, pain medication may be prescribed for them to take at home.
How to prepare for a chemical peel
Don’t exfoliate your skin. As a chemical peel is an intense form of exfoliation, exfoliating beforehand can result in damaged skin. All forms of exfoliation should be avoided for at least one week before the procedure.
Do not wear makeup. While it makes you look good, it leaves a layer of debris that affects the peel. Stop using it for a few days leading up to the procedure.
Avoid sunlight at all costs. Chemical peels work better on non-damaged skin. If you have to be outside, wear a high-SPF sunscreen and a hat.
Keep hydrated. Drink lots of water and avoid products that dry out your skin.
