SkinPen Microneedling – Pre & Post Care Instructions

Pre-Treatment Care (Starting 5–7 Days Before Treatment)

To prepare your skin and minimize sensitivity:

  • Avoid retinoids, tretinoin, adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, and exfoliating products
  • Avoid laser treatments, chemical peels, waxing, or other aggressive skin treatments in the area
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning (including self-tanner)
  • Discontinue blood-thinning supplements if approved by your provider (fish oil, vitamin E, turmeric, NSAIDs)
  • Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to treatment
  • Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, lotions, or sunscreen

Please notify us prior to treatment if you:

  • Have active acne, infection, rash, cold sore, or open skin in the treatment area
  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of poor wound healing

What to Expect on Treatment Day

  • Topical numbing cream will be applied for comfort
  • Treatment typically lasts 30–45 minutes depending on the area
  • Skin will appear red and feel warm, similar to a sunburn

Post-Treatment Care (First 24–72 Hours)

Immediately after treatment and over the next few days:

  • Expect redness, warmth, mild swelling, and tightness for 24–72 hours
  • Use only gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Apply any post-procedure serums provided as directed
  • Avoid makeup for 24 hours
  • Avoid exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and hot showers for 24–48 hours
  • Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the skin

Skin Care Restrictions (Days 3–7)

  • Continue avoiding retinoids, exfoliants, acids, and active ingredients
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and always use sunscreen
  • Skin may feel dry or lightly flake—this is normal

Results & Treatment Series

  • Skin texture and brightness often improve within 1–2 weeks
  • Collagen remodeling continues for 8–12 weeks
  • For optimal results, a series of treatments may be recommended, spaced 4–6 weeks apart
